Task fifteen ( music )

Task fifteen was to create the front cover, contents page and double paged spread. The front cover had to be created using Adobe Photoshop. I found this easier because i already knew how to work it and how to use the tools. This was better because i knew how to do special effects on the images and text to make it look better and stand out.

This is my contents page and triple page spread. I used Quark Express to create these two. I think it was harder because i wasnt so sure on how to use it because it was my first time using it. I learnt the basics and didnt have the time to learn all the new things like effects. Though some of Quark was easier, quicker and better to use like the image boxes.

Task fourteen ( music )

This is my draft of my double page spread. This is what it should look like unless i make changes to it. I have looked at codes and convections of a double page spread to see what i can include in it to make it look better and professional. I have used all the features that will be included except the article because that is already uploaded on task thirteen.

The Saturdays
Four Top 10 hits top singles all over the UK and appearances on television the Saturdays are living it up in Britain. With there sexy looks, big voice and even bigger attitudes the Saturdays are to be the newest, hottest girl group around. Nearly 2 years and they already have had more hits than any other girl band in the land. Brought together in 2008 by Pop group Girls Aloud record label Polyder who has currently got four number ones, four number twos and 15 top 5 singles they are looking at a successful adventure ahead. The Saturdays are five young girls who have had quite a lot of success this year because of all their dedication to their music. They hope to reach the top of the charts without any catfights or big and famous boyfriends. Let’s see if they can.

After weeks of being called ‘the band with no name’ they realized it was time for a recognizable name. The Saturdays wanted to keep their own birth name as they felt it shown who they really are but wanted a name that classed them altogether. Starting off by writing down names that could be a possible band name they came up with over a hundred names. Stating that they didn’t want a typical girl band name that gives a reference of girls in it the list decreased. Searching through the names one caught there eye that was likeable from the beginning. The Saturdays! It fitted in with all the features that they wanted in their name, was fun and was there favourite day of the week. It sounded perfect. Being recognized all over the United Kingdom and Ireland it must of took some time for the Saturdays to adapt to the celebrity life. Luckily for Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Wiseman they had already had a taste of fame when they were twelve years old performing in young group band S club 8 who were originally S club juniors. Frankie states that “S club 8 prepared us for this and we are really thankful for that”. Whilst Frankie and Rochelle were taking a break from fame Mollie King was just starting. As her friends became her band members they set of onto the X factor as the Fallen Angelz hoping for success from “Mr. Nasty” Simon Cowell. Being dropped after getting to boot camp was a huge backfire on Mollie but got her ready for rejection later in life. Mollie wasn’t the only the one that started with a music business, Una Healy started off in a rock band and started showcasing in clubs and bars with her own album that she recorded and wrote herself until she came across The Saturdays. The only band member that hadn’t started off with a music career was Vanessa White who actually attended the famous Sylvia young theatre school that got her onto the west end performing shows such as the Lion king. Every member of the band started off with a performing arts career which could help them with there career now. They all currently have got boyfriends that they have been with for quite a while and are happy with. The Saturdays know that no matter what that there music and each other come first before their boys. The Saturdays see themselves as a proper full-on girl band and they love it. Most groups are letting fame go to their heads and go out partying every night risking there career. Frankie states that “When you get a big opportunity you don’t blow it by getting off your head and being an idiot and well real life is a big enough blast”. The band enjoying sharing there experiences together and once had around 12 girls from another act share there dressing room with no mirror. This shows that the girls aren’t big headed or self absorbed. The Saturdays are sponsored by Impulse.

The Saturday’s genre of music is pop. The band makes sure that it is not known as anything else than pop as they can’t see it as anything else. They state that “it is not cheesy pop; it’s a good pop, nothing like Steps!” The Saturday’s music has a grown up, edgier affair to it making the feel more upbeat and feisty. They’re songs can be seen as slick and electro-soul though some may disagree and say there vocals can be a little off sometimes. The songs are known as really catchy and fun to sing along too. The Saturday’s do not create there own lyrics infact they hire someone to do it for them. They do therefore contribute there ideas to the songs. The lyrics of there songs are based on their everyday situations which makes them really clever as they relate to the audience. All the members of the band sit around with a woman called Ena and she questions them about their feelings and situations. After collecting the personal information she notes it all down and starts to create the lyrics.

The Saturday’s sponsors Impulse are giving all fans a chance to win five tickets to their concert. To win the tickets you have got to write why you love the Saturdays in around 20 words or less. The band is playing an exclusive fan-only gig. The tickets are being given away only on the Saturday’s website. The gig will be on the 5th February 2010 so make sure you get online! The band has been on a few tours in the two years since they were brought together. The first tour they sang on was the Girls aloud one which was back in the May 2008 which got them first recognised by fans. Mollie described the tour as amazing and the best experience ever. The other tour that they supported was the Jonas brothers, a popular Disney favourite for young children back in September 2008. Rochelle described the Jonas brothers as nice boys and stated that the concert had louder fans that ‘Take that’. She said that she had never seen so many screaming girls in one place before. I’m sure that the Saturdays are hoping for that much success in the future. The band has just finished there own tour in July which was very successful and fun.

Touring with Girls aloud and having the same attitudes, music genre and characteristics the band is bound to be thought as the doubles of Girls aloud. In some ways this comment can be seen as positive or negative. Positively Girls aloud have been very successful; they have done so well and have been creating top songs that have been in the charts so why wouldn’t the Saturday’s want to be named after them. Negatively the band are being stereotyped as copying all the moves and music so its only fair that the band can be known as themselves as original. Most artists or bands start off as being named as another band just like Girls aloud were known as clones of the Spice girls. After years of success they have finally got there own name and hopefully so will the Saturday’s. Being quite close to Girls aloud the Saturday’s think of it as a compliment as they’ve taught them quite a lot throughout everything. “Its flattering to be compared with Girls aloud because they have been around for six years but we are our own band, its just because they don’t know much about us but soon they’ll realise” quotes Una. Being compared to Girls aloud isn’t the only view from the public. The Saturdays have been given quite harsh critism but there hoping to lose all of it when they become more recognisable and people know more about them. The public have said that the way the manager dresses them is described as inappropriate and too revealing though the Saturday’s disagree and state that they don’t think its that bad and the styling is up to the record label. The public have rejected them and think of them as manufactured disco dolls. The Saturday’s quote “Were not models who can’t sing. We all sing and we all dance. No ones telling us what to do. We’re all different because we’re just ourselves and that’s they way it should be.” The band haven’t just had bad critism but have had a few good comments for example, the public have said they are producing some good music that is being played everywhere throughout the UK.

The publics view matters the most because they are the ones helping bands through to success by buying their tracks and going to concerts. Every artist or band has got there fans that are going to support them and there critics that just don’t agree or enjoy the band or music. Most bands are compared to other bands because they may have similar features and aspects. It’s just how the music business goes. I gave out questionnaires to get there opinion on the Saturday’s. The answers gave an understanding and a sensible response.

Question one: What do you think of the Saturday’s?
I think that the Saturday’s are really good at what they do. Their music is really good and I like to sing to all the lyrics because they’re really catchy and great to sing along to. They aren’t too full of themselves and sound really lovely.

Question two: Would you say the Saturday’s are the next girls aloud?
In a way id say they are in the music way as they have the same good music and they are becoming really successful like them. I don’t think they are like them though because they all have a different personality which makes them and the band different.

Squashing through the hundreds of fans screaming with excitement, I finally got out of HMV breathing. A long train of people queued up from miles up the street waiting for their chance to get in to see the Saturdays. It was now 6 o’clock and having to of waited 2 hours myself I felt sorry for the long journey and wait for the fans near the back. But it was worth the wait. Four Top 10 hits top singles all over the UK and appearances on television the Saturdays are living it up in Britain. The Saturday’s do not create there own lyrics; their ideas are given to their song writer. The lyrics of there songs are based on their everyday situations which makes them really clever as they relate to the audience for example “me and my heart we got issues” relates to the audience because most people have trouble with relationships. All the members of the band sit around with a woman called Ena their songwriter and she questions them about their feelings and situations. After collecting the personal information she notes it all down and starts to create the lyrics. The Saturdays do a lot of concerts for their fans.
